The accident occurred at the IAF’s Rowriah airbase during landing operations. Defence officials said senior Air Force officers had reached the site and were assessing the situation, while efforts were underway to establish whether the incident had caused any casualties.
According to a report by The Tribune, the aircraft was carrying cargo and several personnel when the crash took place. Initial reports suggest that the AN-32 crash-landed while approaching the runway, following which a fire broke out.
The Indian Air Force has confirmed the incident but has not disclosed any information regarding casualties, stating that further details are awaited.
The AN-32 is a Soviet-origin twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft that plays a crucial role in the IAF’s tactical airlift operations. The aircraft is widely used for troop deployment, cargo transportation and logistical support, particularly in remote and high-altitude regions.
Jorhat is home to one of the Indian Air Force’s key bases in the North East, a strategically important region bordering China and Myanmar.
Further details are awaited as the situation develops.
