In an advisory issued from Tehran, the Embassy of India urged all Indian citizens to avoid unnecessary movement, monitor news updates and maintain situational awareness while awaiting further guidance. An estimated 9,000 Indians, including students, are currently in Iran.

The Embassy said that, owing to heightened risk perception in Tehran, most Indian students in the capital have been relocated to safer locations outside the city. It added that arrangements had been made for their transportation, food and accommodation. A small number of students who declined the offer remain in Tehran.

The advisory came as parts of Tehran and other Iranian cities were reportedly declared “red zones”, with communications described as patchy. The Iranian Red Crescent Society said on Tuesday that at least 787 people had been killed in airstrikes across the country since the start of the conflict.

On Monday, India confirmed its first casualty linked to the hostilities after an oil tanker was reportedly targeted in the Gulf of Oman, resulting in the death of an Indian national on board.

In a statement posted on social media, the Embassy of India in Oman expressed its “deepest condolences” on the death of the Indian national aboard MV Vyom. It said it was in close coordination with local authorities in Oman to facilitate the safe and early repatriation of Indian nationals on board the vessel, adding that all possible assistance would be extended.

Meanwhile, parents of Indian medical students studying in Iran appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to evacuate students stranded in Urmia, citing reports of heavy explosions near their accommodation. In a representation, they said the students were frightened and mentally distressed, and urged authorities to relocate them towards the Armenian or Azerbaijani borders to ensure their safety.

The parents acknowledged the Embassy’s efforts in relocating students from Tehran and referred to a previous evacuation undertaken in June 2025, appealing for similar assistance at the earliest.
