SRINAGAR: Indian Railways has operationalised the country’s first LNG–diesel dual-fuel DEMU train at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, marking a step towards reducing diesel use in rail operations.
The 1,400 HP DEMU train has been converted to a dual-fuel system in its driving power cars, with Liquefied Natural Gas replacing about 40 per cent of conventional diesel consumption.
Divisional Railway Manager, Ahmedabad, Ved Prakash said the converted power cars have completed field trials covering more than 2,000 kilometres and are now running in regular passenger service.
He said the dual-fuel system has functioned without operational issues and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions while improving air quality along rail routes.
