SRINAGAR: Three schools from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been recognised at the Wipro Earthian Awards 2024, an annual programme aimed at fostering sustainability education and action among students. The awards ceremony, hosted at Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, marked the 14th edition of the initiative by Wipro Limited, a statement by the programme organisers said.

Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Manigam, from Kashmir was honoured for its project on solid waste management. The students documented the growing challenge of solid waste disposal in their local area and highlighted the differences between linear disposal and circular recycling. Their submission demonstrated a strong understanding of sustainable waste management practices.
From Ladakh, Lamdon School (Tsang Chu) presented a unique perspective on water management in the cold desert region. The team explored the challenges of water storage and distribution in an area where water supply is limited, though demand is lower due to cold temperatures.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Leh, was recognised for its work on climate change awareness and water conservation. The students examined how changing attitudes towards sustainability are influencing local practices and highlighted the importance of ice stupas in glacial water conservation. Given that the school is residential, water consumption is higher than in day schools, making conservation efforts even more significant.
The awards were presented by Anurag Behar, Chief Executive Officer of the Azim Premji Foundation, and Narayan P S, Global Head of Sustainability and Social Initiatives at Wipro Limited and Managing Trustee of the Wipro Foundation. Speaking at the event, Narayan P S said the programme aims to inspire young minds by fostering learning on the relationship between humanity and nature. He emphasised the role of action-based learning in helping students understand the interconnectedness of individuals, communities, and the environment.
The Wipro Earthian programme is one of India’s largest sustainability education initiatives for schools and colleges. The 2024 edition saw over 1,500 project submissions, with 23 winners and 43 shortlisted entries selected by an independent jury. Since its inception in 2011, the programme has engaged with over 50,000 schools, 4,000 colleges, 200,000 students, and 40,000 teachers, with continued support from various educational institutions and state governments.
