Jammu Kashmir: At 35.5°C, Srinagar Records Hottest Day

   

SRINAGAR: Srinagar on Friday recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius, the highest June temperature in the city since 2005. This marks the second consecutive day the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir has seen extreme heat, with Thursday’s temperature recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng said that this is the highest June temperature recorded in Srinagar since June 25, 2005.

An intense heatwave has gripped Kashmir for the fourth day in a row, with significantly above-normal temperatures reported from across the Valley.  Qazigund 34.5°C (7.1°C above normal), Pahalgam 30.0°C (5.2°C above normal), Kupwara 34.1°C (4.4°C above normal), Kokernag 33.6°C (6.4°C above normal), and Gulmarg 25.2°C (5.2°C above normal).

In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded a maximum of 36.1°C, which is 1.5°C below normal. Other recorded temperatures included Banihal at 30.6°C, Batote 27.8°C, Bhaderwah 32.6°C, and Katra 32.0°C. In Ladakh, Leh recorded 29.5°C and Kargil 32.9°C.

The Meteorological Department has forecast rain and thundershowers in parts of Jammu and Kashmir starting Saturday, which may bring some relief from the ongoing heatwave.
