SRINAGAR: The India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021 has reported the Jammu and Kashmir has seen a modest increase in forest cover, with a net gain of 29 square kilometres. The total forest cover in the region stands at 2,22,236 square kilometres, showcasing the erstwhile state’s efforts towards improving its ecological balance despite facing various environmental challenges.
The Forest Survey of India (FSI), which conducts biennial assessments of the country’s forest cover, has identified the factors contributing to the increase in forest cover, including better conservation measures, afforestation programs, and the restoration of degraded forest lands. While the increase is small, it is a positive sign, especially given the natural calamities and anthropogenic pressures that often affect forest ecosystems. Despite the gains, certain areas, including Jammu & Kashmir, still face significant challenges such as shifting cultivation and pressure from growing human populations.
The Ministry has also pointed out that while there has been a steady increase in forest cover across the country, including Jammu & Kashmir, the effects of climate change on the region remain a concern. The government has not yet conducted specific studies on how traditional forest dwellers in the region are being affected by climate change. This highlights a gap in the government’s approach to fully understanding the local impacts of global warming on vulnerable communities dependent on forests for their livelihoods.
In terms of broader national efforts, the government has been working towards achieving its climate goals through the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). These initiatives focus on reducing the country’s carbon footprint, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy. Jammu & Kashmir, known for its rich natural resources, is expected to play an important role in the country’s transition to a greener economy. As part of this commitment, India has set ambitious targets to reduce its dependence on coal and has made substantial strides in increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy in the country’s energy mix.
