SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir Police on Saturday dismissed as “false and mischievous” online claims by PAFF, an offshoot allegedly linked to Pakistan-based militant groups, that it was responsible for the deadly explosion at Nowgam Police Station.
In a statement posted on X, police said any assertion by PAFF or other Pakistani militant organisations regarding involvement in the blast was “patently false, baseless and mischievous.” The clarification followed reports that PAFF had claimed responsibility, although the claim was yet to be verified.

The explosion occurred at around 11:20 pm on Friday during forensic sampling of a large quantity of ammonium nitrate seized earlier this month. Police officials said the blast took place inside the station while Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) experts, police personnel, and a team led by the local Tehsildar were examining the material. Authorities have classified the incident as a tragic accident, ruling out any militant link.
The blast caused significant casualties and damage to nearby houses. By Saturday morning, nine people had died, including police personnel and officials present during the inspection, while more than two dozen others were injured. Police teams have cordoned off the area, and forensic examinations are ongoing.
Senior officers stressed that speculation over the cause of the explosion was “unwarranted,” emphasising that the investigation is being conducted “professionally and thoroughly.”
