SRINAGAR: A combined 1,237 houses were completed in Jammu and Srinagar under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor component of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, parliamentary records show, highlighting a modest urban housing legacy for the Union Territory amid a much larger national programme.
According to Lok Sabha data, central assistance of Rs 32.69 crore was released for Jammu city and Rs 28.18 crore for Srinagar under the BSUP component. Across India, the BSUP component recorded central releases of Rs 12,031.01 crore and 722,815 houses completed in the selected cities listed under the mission.
The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, launched in December 2005, ran formally until March 2012; funding for ongoing projects was extended and released through March 2017. The parliamentary reply made clear that no funds were allocated under BSUP in the last three years and the current year, reflecting the formal end of that specific programme stream.
Since 2015, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has implemented the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban, which was reconfigured as PMAY-U 2.0 ‘Housing for All’ from September 1, 2024. The ministry told Parliament that, to date, a total of 122.28 lakh houses has been sanctioned under PMAY-U schemes nationwide, including 10.66 lakh under PMAY-U 2.0; 114.84 lakh houses have been grounded, and 97.02 lakh have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries.
With BSUP closed, the onus now lies on PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 to address remaining deficits in affordable housing and associated civic amenities in urban poor settlements.
Beyond housing units, the BSUP model emphasised linked civic services. The Lok Sabha data focuses on housing completions and central transfers.
