SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 201 registered civilian drones, while Ladakh has yet to register any, the Government of India informed Parliament on Thursday.
The information was shared in the Lok Sabha in response to a question from MP, on the promotion and regulation of civilian drones in the country.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India has issued a total of 38,475 Unique Identification Numbers (UIN) for drones as of 31 January 2026, including 201 in Jammu and Kashmir and none in Ladakh.
The Ministry said the government is promoting drones for developmental purposes, particularly in rural and remote areas, with applications in healthcare delivery, agriculture, disaster management, and infrastructure mapping.
It added that the Drone Rules, 2021, along with subsequent amendments, provide for safe and regulated operations while facilitating ease of doing business. Nearly 90 per cent of India’s airspace has been designated as green zones, where drones can operate without prior approval, while red and yellow zones require permission.
To prevent misuse, drones must have type certification, a valid Remote Pilot Certificate, training through DGCA-authorised institutions, and a Unique Identification Number. The government has prohibited using drones to carry arms, explosives, or other dangerous goods.
