SRINAGAR: Union Minister Jitendra Singh has announced that approval has been granted for two major tunnel projects on National Highway-244 in Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at strengthening road connectivity in Doda, Kishtwar, and Udhampur districts.

In a post on X, the Minister said the approved works include the Uni-Directional Twin Tube Sudhmahadev–Dranga Tunnels, measuring 12.85 km with 2-lane plus parallel service (PS) approaches, and the Twin Tube Singhpora–Vailoo Tunnel, spanning 38.61 km with similar approach structures. The total estimated cost of the projects is Rs 9,779.42 crore.
The development has been described as “heartening news” for the three districts, effectively dispelling earlier reports that suggested the project had been shelved.
The Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the decision reflects the government’s continued emphasis on strengthening infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also welcomed the approval, calling it a significant step towards improving road connectivity and promoting economic growth in the hilly regions of the Union Territory.
In a post on X, CM Omar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for their support and consideration of the Sudhmahadev–Dranga and Singhpora–Vailoo tunnel projects on NH-244.
He said the projects will enhance connectivity, ensure all-weather road access, and boost economic development across the Chenab Valley and adjoining areas.
