JDA Clarifies Demolition Drive, Says Encroachment Cleared for Flats for EWS

JAMMU: The Jammu Development Authority (JDA) clarified that the demolition drive carried out on November 20 at Lower Roop Nagar, Jammu, was aimed at clearing encroachments to pave the way for constructing 208 one-bedroom flats for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

The 25-kanal land, under illegal possession, was earmarked for the project, which includes a bedroom, hall, kitchen, and bathroom in each flat.

The JDA revealed that some illegal occupants had rented out kiosks and dome tenements on the land, despite being rehabilitated at other locations like Purkhoo, Muthi, and Jagti. After serving eviction notices under the JK Public Premises Act in January 2024 and providing 10 months for compliance, the Authority proceeded with the demolition after occupants vacated or removed their belongings.

The drive targeted 12 abandoned dome quarters and 22 kiosks, with the JDA ensuring that belongings from a few shops were safely removed. The Authority emphasised that the action was non-discriminatory, involving individuals from various communities, including non-domiciles, to ensure transparency and fairness.

The JDA stated that the demolition was essential for freeing the land for public infrastructure, reiterating its commitment to continuing such drives against encroachments in the future to support government projects and public welfare.
