International wushu player Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh, a Jammu resident, has won a bronze medal in the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia on Wednesday.
Bhanu, a resident of Muthi town in Jammu, registered a quarterfinal victory over his Philippines rival in the men’s 60-kg category on Tuesday, but then lost the semifinal bout against Erfan Ahangarian of Iran after suffering an injury.
“Bhanu suffered injury in his right leg during the bout. But he never gave up and played till the end,” reported The Tribune.
Singh’s coach, Kuldeep Handoo, national wushu coach, has appreciated his performance in the game. Handoo, is also from the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
“This is the best performance from the Indian wushu team in the Asian Games history. Naorem Roshibina Devi, Santosh Kumar, Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh and Narender Grewal have assured bronze medal for the country,” Handoo informed Tribune from Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the police chief, DGP SP Vaid, also appreciated the performance of Bhanu and Handoo in the Asian Games.
Earlier in the day DGP tweeted “Heartiest Congratulations to Bhanu Pratap Singh & National coach @Kuldeep Handoo both from @JKP for winning a Bronze Medal in Wushu in the Asian Games at Jakarta.The Nation is proud of you.”
