JSD Readies 2.61 Lakh Litres of Water for 30-Hour Shutdown

   

SRINAGAR: Ahead of the 30-hour water shutdown, the Jal Shakti Department (JSD) has stocked over 2.61 lakh litres of water for consumers in areas where the water supply will remain affected from tomorrow.

A top official in the JSD told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)—that 15 water tankers with a capacity of 9,000 litres each have already been made available for consumers, while an additional 14 water tankers with the same capacity have been brought from different areas to ensure that people in the affected regions do not face hardships.

“In order to cater to the needs of people over the next 30 hours from tomorrow, we have made available a total of 29 water tankers, each with a capacity of 9,000 litres. We will ensure that nobody faces inconvenience during this period,” he said.

The 29 water tankers, with a combined capacity of 2.61 lakh litres, have been stocked for consumers.

Notably, the Executive Engineer, Water Works Division Srinagar, had issued an “urgent public notice” last Tuesday regarding a 30-hour shutdown of the Sindh Power Canal HEP Old Ganderbal for desilting of the forebay.

As per the urgent public notice, this shutdown is scheduled to take place from 22nd to 23rd February 2025 as part of necessary repair work by the Department of Civil Investigation & Design Wing, JKPDC.

As a result, raw water supply to the Water Treatment Plants of Nishat, Alusteng, and Rangil will be severely impacted. Consequently, the potable water supply will be affected in major parts of Srinagar City and surrounding areas.

The advisory further states that the affected areas include: Zakoora, Gulab Bagh, Alusteng, Shuhama, Hadoora, Chatterhama, Khalmulla, Habak, Naseem Bagh, Busserbagh, Malla Bagh, Pandach, Buchpora, Soura, Anchar, Bohlohpora, Zoonimar, Nowshera, Bagh-i-Ali Mardan Khan, Zadibal, Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Rajouri Kadal, Nallahmar, Nawakadal, Bohri Kadal, Nowhatta, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal, Sadribal, Nigeen, Saida Kadal, Rainawari, Khanyar, Khayam, Nowpora, Dalgate, Konkhan, Gagribal, Nehru Park, Dal areas, Brein, Gupkar, Sonwar, Indra Nagar, Shivpora, Batwara, Pandrethan, Lal Chowk, Court Road, Residency Road, M.A. Road, Bishembar Nagar, Babademb, Fateh Kadal, Barbarshah, Habba Kadal, Gow Kadal, Shaheed Gunj, Karan Nagar, Kakasarai, Balgarden, Chattabal, Kawdara, Eidgah, Mahrajgunj, Zaina Kadal, Saidpora, Bemina, Firdous Abad, parts of Batmaloo, Qamarwari, Zainakoot, Noorabad, Umerabad, and adjacent areas.

The advisory also notifies the general public to store a sufficient supply of water to meet their needs during the shutdown. Furthermore, hospitals operating in and around Srinagar City are requested to maintain close coordination with PHE authorities throughout the shutdown period.
