Kashmir Mirwaiz Calls for United Action Against Drug Addiction, Highlights Role of Mosques

   

SRINAGAR: In a heartfelt address at Masjid Ali Thani in Eidgah, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq called for collective efforts to tackle the growing menace of drug addiction, which he described as a critical issue affecting societal well-being. Speaking to a large congregation, he revealed a staggering statistic—over 1.5 million individuals are grappling with addiction—underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Mirwaiz highlighted the potential of religious institutions, particularly mosques, in addressing the crisis. “The vast network of mosques can be pivotal in this fight. Mosque committees can collaborate and implement effective strategies to combat drug addiction in every area,” he said. He urged these committees to monitor their localities for suspicious activities and assist in rehabilitating those in need, emphasising the transformative power of community involvement.

Acknowledging law enforcement’s role, Mirwaiz praised the police for their intensified campaign against drug trafficking. He commended recent actions, including the arrest of several drug dealers and the confiscation of their properties, stating, “It is encouraging to see the administration taking decisive steps. When good measures are taken for the welfare of our society, they should also be appreciated by all.”

Mirwaiz’s address centred on the importance of unified and proactive measures, advocating for a synergy between religious institutions and law enforcement. He stressed that such collaboration is vital for fostering a safer and healthier society, free from the scourge of drug addiction.
