The intense cold wave has decreased Saturday after Kashmir Valley and several areas in Pir Panchal region received fresh snowfall.

Fresh snowfall occurred everywhere in the Valley including Srinagar city which received light rain with traces of snow.

Higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Pir Panchal mountain range and other places, received moderate snowfall on Saturday.

An official of the MET department said there would be an improvement in the weather from Sunday.

He said that Gulmarg received 28 mm of fresh snow while Kupwara district in north Kashmir received 14.1mm.

He added that famous tourist spot Pahalgam received 4.7mm, Kokernag 0.3 mm, Banihal received 0.8 mm while Qazigund received 2.5 mm fresh snow.

The Srinagar-Jammu Highway was closed due to snow and slippery conditions.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was minus 0.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra – settled at a low of minus 4.5 degrees.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius last night.

Leh recorded minus 11.9 degree Celsius and Kargil minus 16.8 degrees as the minimum temperatures.

Jammu recorded a low of 8.5 degrees Celsius while Batote recorded 1.8, Banihal recorded 0.7, and Bhaderwah recorded 0.6 degree Celsius.
