SRINAGAR: With deep sorrow, the family of Khurshid Ahmad Malik (IAS Retd), former Commissioner of the Jammu and Kashmir Government and Vice President of the Voluntary Medicare Society, Bemina, announced his passing. Malik breathed his last on the evening of Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at his residence in Hyderpora, Srinagar. He was a respected figure both in public service and for his philanthropic work with the specially-abled community.

Malik’s funeral prayers (Namazi Jinaza) were held at his residence at 9.30 am on Thursday. He was later laid to rest in the family’s ancestral graveyard behind the Civil Secretariat, Srinagar.
Malik had a distinguished career as an IAS officer, though his life took a tragic turn almost 38 years ago when he met a road accident while travelling from Srinagar to Jammu. The accident claimed the lives of his brother-in-law and niece and left Malik with a critical spinal cord injury, rendering him immobile for the remainder of his life. Despite this life-altering injury, Malik’s resilience shone through as he continued his service in the government, thanks to a specially adapted vehicle. His unwavering spirit extended beyond his professional duties as he dedicated himself to the welfare of the specially-abled community in Kashmir.
Malik joined the Kashmir Voluntary Medicare Society in Bemina – founded by Dr Maqbool, which has since become a cornerstone facility for the care and rehabilitation of specially-abled individuals. Thousands have benefitted from the services provided by this institution, which continues to offer support to those in need across the region. In VMS, Malik dedicatedly worked on setting up of spinal injury vertical that is now the only facility available in kashmir.
Malik is survived by his three daughters, one of them a medical doctor. Two of his daughters reside in the United States of America. Malik’s wife, who passed away from cancer a few years ago, was the sister of renowned Kashmiri ENT specialist, Dr Maqbool.
The people of Kashmir will remember Malik not only for his contributions to public service but also for his humanitarian work. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. Heartfelt condolences pour in for the bereaved family from all sections of the society.
