SRINAGAR: Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray, an assistant professor of Islamic Studies at Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal, has published a book with Peter Lang, a renowned international publisher. The book, Perspectives on Interpreting Islam in the Contemporary Indo-Pak Subcontinent: Issues and Trends, examines key intellectual developments in Islamic thought in the region.

Dr Parray, who hails from Tral in south Kashmir, has authored eight books and numerous research articles. His academic expertise spans Islamic political thought, Islam and modernity, Islamic intellectual tradition, and Qur’anic studies. His previous book, Islam and Democracy in the 21st Century, was published by Oxford University Press.
The latest work, spanning over 260 pages, explores contemporary trends and challenges in Islamic scholarship. It critically analyses the contributions of leading Muslim thinkers in the subcontinent, including Abdur Raheem Kidwai, Yasin Mazhar Siddiqui, Muhammad Nejatullah Siddiqi, and Muhammad Khalid Masud. It discusses themes such as Qur’anic studies, the Prophet’s biography, Islamic legal thought, democracy, and gender issues.
Speaking with Kashmir Life, Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray said, “I am humbled to be the first author from Kashmir to be published by Peter Lang, a distinguished international publisher. This achievement holds special significance for me.”
Reflecting on the publishing process, he added, “It has been a privilege to work with Peter Lang, particularly Ms. Nandini Ganguli, acquisitions editor at their Chennai office. Her belief in my work and tireless efforts played a crucial role in bringing this book to fruition.”
Dr. Parray emphasized the book’s contribution to contemporary Islamic studies, saying, “This work provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Islamic thought in the Indo-Pak subcontinent, focusing on key trends and debates shaping the discourse today.”
Expressing his gratitude, he said, “I deeply appreciate Peter Lang’s commitment to academic excellence and diversity. Their support has allowed me to share my research with a global audience.”
The book has received praise from scholars of contemporary Islamic studies. Professor Kersten Carool of Catholic University Leuven described it as an essential contribution to modern Islamic intellectual history, while Dr Abdul Kader Choughley of Ahsan Academy of Research called it a significant addition to studies on Islamic thought in South Asia. Professor Asma Afsaruddin of Indiana University Bloomington, who wrote the book’s foreword, commended its depth and scholarly rigour.
Nandini Ganguli, acquisitions editor at Peter Lang India, said, “Dr Parray’s work is insightful and well-researched. It provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Islamic thought in the Indo-Pak subcontinent.”
With this publication, Dr Parray became the first academic from Kashmir to be published by Peter Lang, which has offices in Berlin, Bruxelles, Lausanne, New York, Oxford, and Chennai. The book was officially announced on March 22, 2025, and is now available on Peter Lang’s website and other online platforms.
