SRINAGAR: In a significant push towards sustainable urban development, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Kishtwar, has spearheaded plans to create a City Forest on the outskirts of Kishtwar Town. This initiative aims to boost the region’s green cover and enhance ecological balance, contributing to a healthier urban environment.

In a meeting, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kishtwar, presented a detailed overview of the City Forest Plan, outlining an ambitious afforestation project that will span 975 kanals of land. Key aspects of the plan include large-scale plantation, habitat creation, and improved green cover, which are anticipated to enhance air quality and provide a recreational space for residents.
During the meeting, DDC reviewed critical elements of the project, such as fencing, irrigation systems, and ongoing maintenance, stressing the importance of building a self-sustaining ecosystem. Departments involved were instructed to ensure necessary resources, particularly water supply, to support the growth of new saplings.
The DDC highlighted the significance of a collaborative approach, urging all departments to work in close coordination to complete the project promptly. The concept of the City Forest, envisioned as a Nagar Van near Shalimar, is a flagship initiative, which is aimed at counterbalancing the environmental impact of forthcoming hydroelectric power projects in the district.
DDC underscored the City Forest’s potential to improve the region’s ecological resilience, conserve local biodiversity, and raise environmental awareness. He emphasised that such green spaces would mitigate urban heat, improve air quality, and offer Kishtwar residents a natural retreat for outdoor activities.
