SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his Punya Tithi, stressing on the relevance of Gandhiji’s principles of truth and non-violence in today’s world. He announced that month-long celebrations commemorating Gandhi Jayanti would continue across Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising their importance in promoting peace and harmony.
Speaking at the Shanti Doot Sammelan, organised by the Gandhi Global Family, the Lieutenant Governor honoured the families of army personnel who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. He also paid tribute to the leaders, freedom fighters, and martyrs who dedicated their lives to India’s independence.
“The world is witnessing conflicts, and in many places, societies are facing disruption due to aggression. In such a scenario, the need for peace and non-violence is deeply felt. I am confident that Bapu’s ideals will continue to guide humanity towards the right path,” LG Sinha said.
The Lieutenant Governor urged society to rededicate itself to Gandhian values and work towards the empowerment of the poor, youth, women, and farmers. He reiterated that the welfare of the underprivileged should be the government’s top priority and that collective efforts must bring the most deprived sections into the mainstream of development.
“Pujya Bapu Ji once said that his mission was to wipe tears from every eye. This should be our life’s motto,” LG Sinha stated, calling for unity in achieving Gandhiji’s vision of an inclusive and developed India.
During the event, the Lieutenant Governor was conferred with the Shanti Doot Samman by the Gandhi Global Family. Several distinguished personalities, including Padma Shri awardees Dr SP Varma, Prof Vishwa Murti Shastri, Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri, and Sh Romalo Ram, along with meritorious students and youth, were felicitated with the Gandhi Doot Samman.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the martyrs of India’s freedom struggle. Attendees took a pledge to uphold Gandhiji’s ideals and work towards social harmony.
The event was attended by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, ADGP Jammu Anand Jain, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, senior civil and police officials, members of the Gandhi Global Family, families of martyrs and freedom fighters, social organisations, and students.
