The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake occurred at around 9.04 pm local time, with its epicentre located about 70 miles east of Akyab. The tremor originated at a depth of approximately 57 kilometres.

Shaking was reported from parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, as well as neighbouring Bangladesh. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The EMSC noted that this was the third earthquake to be felt in Myanmar over the past 71 hours.

Myanmar experienced a far more destructive earthquake in March last year, when a magnitude 7.7 tremor caused widespread devastation. The epicentre of that quake was near Sagaing, with Sagaing and Mandalay among the worst-affected areas.

State-run media had reported that the March earthquake killed nearly 3,500 people and caused extensive damage to buildings, bridges, roads and power infrastructure across the country.
