SRINAGAR: A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island early on Sunday, authorities reported.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor occurred at 12:57 am local time, with its epicentre located less than 100 kilometres northeast of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital. The quake originated at a depth of 619.8 kilometres, classifying it as a deep-focus earthquake.
No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been confirmed. Local authorities are monitoring the situation, and the public has been advised to remain alert.
The earthquake comes amid a region prone to seismic activity due to complex tectonic movements in Southeast Asia.
