Manzoor Fazili Passes Away

Noted academician, writer, columnist and political analyst Professor Manzoor Fazili passed away at his native town in north Kashmir Bandipore district late last night.

Fazili, 80, was fighting cancer from last one and a half year. He was buried at his ancestral village Wonagam Bandipore on Monday morning where his relatives and friends participated in the funeral.

Fazili is survived by his wife, two sons Ehsan Fazili- Special Correspondent for The Tribune newspaper, Irfan Fazili- who teaches Russian language at Kashmir University, and two daughters. Fazili’s wife, sons, daughters and his grandchildren were on his side at the time of his death. The family said that the Chahrum would be observed on Thursday July 11.

Manzoor Fazili was born on March 3, 1933 at Gamroo Bandipore, had an illustrious career as a teacher in various Government colleges in the valley and the University of Kashmir.

After completing his education from the University of Kashmir and post-graduation from Aligarh Muslim University, Prof Fazili joined the government as a school teacher and later as a school lecturer in 1961. He taught Political Science at Amar Singh College (1961-66) and later at SP College (1966-71). As a college teacher, he taught at the Government Degree College, Sopore (1971-76) and then from 1982 to 1991. He also taught at the Post-Graduate Department of Political Science, Kashmir University from 1976 to 1982.

He did his Ph D from the University of Kashmir in 1977 and one of the evaluators of his thesis happened to be Boitros Boitros Ghali, Ex-Secretary General of the UNO.

His publications in English included Socialist Ideas and Movement in Kashmir (1980), Kashmir: Government and Politics (1982), J&K Constitution (1983); Hasan: Kashmir Historiographer (1983); A Liberated Teacher (1996), The Prince of Kashmir (1997); Springs of Love – 45 episodes, published in Kashmir Times, Jammu with a subtitle ‘Flowery Hourri’; Gossip of the Day – more than 100 papers regarding politics, published in Kashmir Times, Jammu, Letter to the unknown, published in Kashmir Images, Greater Kashmir – 20 letters.

Prof  Fazili’s Kashmiri publications include Seyastich Perzan, Luke Seyasat; Munwar Shah, Luk Hakumat and Mukhtesar Tareikh-e-Kashmir.

He was a member of the Cultural Organisation, Srinagar and Advisor to Adbee Markaz Kamraz.

Prof Fazili had also been conferred J&K Academy of Arts and Culture award.
