SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Defence has raised concern over the circulation of fake and unverified news by certain media outlets, cautioning that such reporting may compromise military operations and endanger the lives of security personnel involved in counter-insurgency efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a formal communication issued today, the Defence Ministry referred to an earlier advisory from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, dated April 26, 2025. The advisory directed media organisations to avoid real-time coverage or publication of visuals and information based on unofficial sources during ongoing defence operations.
Officials said that the spread of unverified content — often presented as breaking news may inadvertently aid hostile elements. Such reporting, they said, could disrupt military actions and cause confusion on the ground, affecting national security efforts.
“Dissemination of real-time or source-based content related to military movements or engagements is strictly prohibited,” the advisory said. It emphasised the need for media to act responsibly and align with national interest, especially in conflict zones like Jammu and Kashmir.
The Defence Ministry has urged all news outlets to comply with the MIB advisory without exception and ensure editorial oversight to prevent the publication of content that may undermine security protocols or spread misinformation.
