MeT Issues Yellow Alert for Jammu Kashmir; 4-Day Rain, Snow Predicted

   

SRINAGAR: Fresh precipitation has provided some respite as it has led to an increase in the water level of the River Jhelum and its tributaries. Rains and snowfall have also revitalised the Achabal Spring in South Kashmir.

According to data, the water level of the Jhelum at Sangam rose from -1.05 ft at 5:00 PM on Thursday to -0.74 ft at 5:00 PM on Friday.

At Ram Munshi Bagh, the level increased from 3.44 ft on Thursday evening to 3.54 ft by Friday evening.

Despite the increase, the Jhelum’s water level remains below zero at multiple monitoring stations. Additionally, streams such as Rambiyara, Lidder, and Pohru Nallas were flowing below zero levels on Friday evening.

The historic Achabal Spring in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has come back to life after having dried up. The spring has now rejuvenated and returned to its original state.

Notably, most parts of Kashmir received rainfall over the past 24 hours.

According to official data, Batote and Bhaderwah recorded the highest precipitation at 48 mm and 41 mm, respectively.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded 11.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Kokernag received 27.2 mm of rainfall, while Gulmarg recorded 7.8 mm of rainfall along with 7.0 cm of snowfall during the same period.

Pahalgam and Qazigund recorded over 14 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while Kupwara received 9.8 mm.

In Jammu division, the Jammu district recorded 27.4 mm of precipitation, Banihal received 38.9 mm, and Katra witnessed 27.7 mm of rainfall since last evening.

The local Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Jammu and Kashmir divisions, forecasting a four-day wet spell from February 25 to February 28.

While dry weather is expected for the next three days, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that from February 25 to 28, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain and snow at most places, with isolated areas expected to receive heavy rainfall and snowfall.
