SRINAGAR: Dr Farooq Abdullah, the National Conference chief, showered praises on the recently unveiled Congress manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, expressing optimism that its promises would be fulfilled.

“It is a good manifesto. What else do you want?” Abdullah remarked to reporters following Jumatul Vida prayers at the Hazratbal Shrine in Kashmir.

Abdullah also advocated for greater parliamentary oversight of national probe agencies, suggesting that it would be beneficial for the nation. He emphasized the importance of ensuring accountability and transparency in such institutions.

Taking a swipe at the BJP, Abdullah accused them of perpetuating divisive politics by attempting to create rifts between Hindus and Muslims. He voiced his concerns, stating, “I hope and pray that they do not succeed in their designs.”

Meanwhile, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who was also offered prayers at Dargah Hazratbal, lamented the closure of the main religious and cultural centre for Muslims in Kashmir on Jumatul Vida. She criticised the ongoing restrictions imposed since August 5, 2019, stating that Kashmir continues to be under an “open-air prison” environment.

Tens of thousands of people offered prayers at the shrine even as the Friday gathering at Jamia Majid was prevented by law enforcement agencies.
