SRINAGAR: At least one person was killed and four others injured after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Haixi Prefecture in Qinghai Province in northwest China on Tuesday, according to Chinese state media.
The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the earthquake occurred at 5:06 pm local time (0906 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres in the high-altitude region of Haixi.
State news agency Xinhua reported that one person had died and four others sustained injuries in the quake. Authorities have launched assessments to determine the extent of damage and the impact on local communities.
China Central Television (CCTV) reported that emergency response teams and local officials were evaluating the situation, while rescue and relief operations were being coordinated in affected areas.
The CENC said several aftershocks were recorded following the main tremor, including one measuring around magnitude 5, raising concerns about further damage and disruption.
There were no immediate reports of widespread structural damage, but authorities continued to monitor the affected region and assess losses.
Qinghai Province, located on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, is seismically active and has experienced several significant earthquakes in recent years.
