SRINAGAR: The office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said he has expressed gratitude to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-I) timeline till March 2027.
According to an official post shared on social media, the extension has been granted to enable completion of ongoing rural road projects across the Union Territory.
The move is seen as significant as several connectivity projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana had been facing delays due to difficult terrain, harsh weather conditions and execution challenges, particularly in remote and hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
In his remarks, Abdullah said the decision would help ensure timely completion of key infrastructure works without disruption. He emphasised that improved road connectivity is critical for development, especially in rural and far-flung regions.
The Chief Minister added that the extended timeline would enhance access to essential services and contribute to overall socio-economic growth in the Union Territory.
Officials said the PMGSY has played a vital role in improving rural connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, though several projects remain incomplete due to logistical and environmental constraints.
The extension till March 2027 is expected to provide executing agencies with additional time to complete pending works and strengthen road infrastructure in underserved areas.
