SRINAGAR: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Humayun Muzzammil Bhat of Jammu and Kashmir Police has been posthumously conferred the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, for his extraordinary valour during an anti-terror operation in Anantnag last year.

DySP Bhat is among four personnel who were awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously.
Bhat was killed in September 2023 during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district, a joint operation that also claimed the lives of Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Aashish Dhonchak of the Indian Army.
Hailing from a family in Jammu and Kashmir’s police service, Humayun Bhat was the son of retired Inspector General of Police Ghulam Hassan Bhat. The Kirti Chakra is awarded for conspicuous gallantry, otherwise than in the face of the enemy.
The investiture ceremony also saw several other soldiers and police personnel being decorated for gallantry. In total, six Kirti Chakras and 33 Shaurya Chakras were awarded, including multiple posthumous honours.
