SRINAGAR: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM on Tuesday following a noisy protest by Opposition members, triggered by the rejection of their adjournment notices seeking a discussion on multiple issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Chaos ensued shortly after the laying of listed papers and reports during the morning session, when Deputy Chairman Harivansh informed the House that he had received 24 notices under Rule 267. The notices called for discussions on topics such as the SIR process, alleged discrimination against Bengali migrant workers in several states, and demands for Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation.
Rejecting all the notices, the Deputy Chairman stated that they did not comply with previous directions issued by the Chair. The decision sparked loud protests from the Opposition benches, with several MPs raising slogans including “Vote Ki Chori Band Karo” (Stop stealing votes).
Despite repeated appeals from the Chair to maintain order and allow the House to function particularly to enable members to raise issues during Zero Hour, the protests continued unabated. Later proceedings were ultimately adjourned until 2 PM.
