SRINAGAR: Several regions in Kashmir have experienced unprecedented rainfall, breaking all-time records for 24-hour rainfall in July.

Pahalgam experienced its highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in July. Rainfall on Saturday reached 73.3 mm, surpassing the previous record of 60.4 mm set on July 16, 1983.

Qazigund also faced relentless rainfall, resulting in the second-highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in July. The region received a staggering 94.0 mm of rainfall, matching the previous all-time record of 98.8 mm set on July 27, 1995.

Kokernag witnessed significant precipitation as well. The region recorded 76.3 mm of rainfall today, surpassing the previous all-time record of 105.9 mm set on July 10, 2015.

Gulmarg also recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall in July since 2010. The rainfall measured 42.4 mm, surpassing the previous record of 52.4 mm set on July 28, 2010. However, it fell short of the all-time record of 113.0 mm recorded on July 26, 1995.

In Banihal, the rainfall reached alarming levels, breaking the all-time record for 24-hour rainfall in July. Today’s rainfall measured a staggering 103.8 mm, surpassing the previous record of 83.0 mm set on July 25, 1995.

As the situation evolves, authorities continue to closely monitor water levels in the Jhelum River and other water bodies. Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of residents and minimise the impact of the heavy rainfall on the region’s infrastructure and livelihoods.

Chief Engineer Irrigation and flood control department Srinagar on Saturday asked all field staff to remain alert and keep the flood fighting machinery in readiness.

“In view of forecast of heavy rains predicted by the Meteorological Department from 08-07- 2023 to 09-07-2023 all the Flood Zonal Committees are directed to remain alert in their respective jurisdictions and monitor the situation closely. They will keep the flood fighting machinery in readiness for their immediate mobilisation in the event of any flood like situation,” reads the circular issued by Chief Engineer.
