Srinagar

Normal life was on Monday crippled in Kashmir Valley due to a shutdown called by resistance leaders to mourn the killing of 13 militants and four civilians in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in the downtown and areas falling under two police stations in the civil lines and old city since early Monday morning.

Shops and business establishments were closed and traffic was off the road in civil lines and uptown Srinagar though few private vehicles, besides cabs and three-wheelers, could be seen plying on some routes.

All educational institutions remained closed while rail service on the second day has been suspended as a precautionary measure following the shutdown called by Hurriyat leaders in the valley.

All examinations scheduled on Monday were also postponed by all three universities including Kashmir University, Islamic University and Central University.

Business and other activities remained crippled in main business hubs of the city, including historic Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Regal Chowk, Maisuma, Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), Batmaloo, Moulana Azad Road, Residency Road and Dalgate.
