SRINAGAR: Taking cognisance of the alarming rise in dog bite cases, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the removal of stray dogs from public institutions, including schools, hospitals and bus stands, across the country.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria issued the order while hearing a suo motu case concerning the menace of stray dogs. The court further ruled that the animals picked up from such premises must not be released back to the same locations.
The bench also directed local bodies to conduct regular inspections to ensure that no stray dog habitats exist within or around educational institutions, healthcare facilities or transport hubs.
The order comes amid growing public concern over the surge in stray dog attacks reported from various parts of the country in recent months.
