SRINAGAR: Hotelier Mushtaq Chaya, owner of Radisson Hotel Srinagar, on Wednesday strongly criticised the organisers of the Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL) after the abrupt cancellation of the tournament and reports that its organisers absconded, leaving behind unpaid bills and allegations of fraud.
Speaking to the media, Chaya said, “We were informed that a reputed company was coming to provide a platform for our youth to display their cricketing talent. Many players from outside Jammu Kashmir had arrived, and expectations were high. But it turned out to be a major disappointment. They have tarnished their own reputation. They took money from us, from vendors, from players, and from hoteliers. Our funds, too, are stuck with them.”
Chaya confirmed that he had filed a complaint and expected legal action to follow. “The matter has been reported to the police, and they are investigating. Let’s hope justice is served, Insha’Allah,” he said.
Regarding the recovery of dues, Chayya stated, “Police have assured us they are in touch with the organisers. Our management kept following up, and the organisers repeatedly promised repayment ‘today or tomorrow’. Once the funds are recovered, we will inform everyone.”
Authorities have launched an investigation following complaints from players, hotel operators and vendors who allege they were left unpaid after the league was cancelled midway.
The IHPL, which commenced on October 25 and was scheduled to continue until November 9, featured eight teams, over 70 players, umpires and support staff. Among the international cricketers invited were West Indies star Chris Gayle and New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder, lending global appeal to the event.
Participants and officials were accommodated at Hotel Radisson Collection, Rajbagh, with assurances that all expenses would be covered. However, on the morning of November 2, the organisers reportedly disappeared without settling dues. The Radisson Collection has claimed outstanding payments of Rs 51 lakh, while total unpaid liabilities across vendors and staff remain unconfirmed.
