Storms and Rain Kill 117 in Uttar Pradesh

   

SRINAGAR: A powerful thunderstorm that swept across Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday afternoon has left at least 117 people dead and caused extensive destruction across multiple districts, according to a report by The Times of India.

According to data from the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner’s office, 113 deaths were linked to storm-related incidents, including collapsing structures and falling debris, while four people were killed in lightning strikes.

As reported by The Hindu, citing state authorities, the disaster also left 79 people injured, resulted in the death of 177 livestock, and damaged around 330 houses. The storm affected several districts, with emergency teams continuing relief and assessment work on the ground.

The Indian Express, quoting officials, reported that Prayagraj was the worst-hit district, recording 23 deaths as strong winds uprooted trees, flattened walls and damaged homes. Mirzapur followed with 19 fatalities, while Sant Ravidas Nagar reported 16 deaths and Fatehpur registered 11.

Other districts, including Rae Bareli, Unnao and Budaun, also witnessed significant casualties and property damage, underscoring the widespread impact of the severe weather event.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said wind speeds in several affected areas reached near-cyclonic levels, contributing to the scale of devastation. Authorities have issued advisories as monitoring continues for further weather fluctuations across the region.
