The shutdown call was given by private transport associations, leading to buses, Sumos remaining off the roads. Sit-ins and demonstrations were also reported at multiple bus stands across the Valley.

Protesters said the move to extend government-run Smart City buses beyond Srinagar into district and rural areas could severely impact their livelihoods. They argued that thousands of families dependent on private transport services may face economic hardship if the decision is implemented.

A driver from Ganderbal, Tariq Shah, who has been operating a bus for the past decade, said the existing fleet of Smart City buses was already affecting earnings. He added that further expansion would reduce daily income, which currently ranges between Rs 300 and 400, making it difficult to sustain household expenses.

Another transport operator stated that while Smart City buses in Srinagar and district headquarters may be acceptable, their operation in far-flung rural areas would create financial strain, especially for those repaying vehicle loans.

The protesting operators demanded that the government reconsider and roll back the expansion plan, citing uncertainty over future business prospects for the private transport sector.

Despite the strike, private vehicles continued to operate normally, limiting widespread disruption in movement.
