SRINAGAR: Transporters and truck drivers across India have initiated a nationwide strike (Chakka Jam) in protest against the implementation of a new penal law, particularly focusing on hit-and-run cases. This strike has raised alarm bells among the Valley-based fruit growers who are now grappling with the potential disruption of the transportation of fruits, vegetables, and essential commodities from the Valley to various destinations.

The Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, representing all fruit growers associations in the Valley, is witnessing a surge in distress calls from concerned growers. The strike threat poses a severe risk to the prompt transportation of perishable items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, which could result in substantial financial losses for the growers.

Expressing apprehension over the dire consequences of the Chakka Jam, Bashir Ahmad Basheer, Chairman of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, issued a direct appeal to the Government of India. Basheer emphasised the urgent need for negotiations with the striking transporters and truck drivers to avert potential crises and financial losses.

“In case immediate negotiation is not processed by the Government with all India Transporters, there is no doubt that the Chakka Jam will create unlimited financial losses to all concerned. However, in the case of fresh fruits and vegetables, if not immediately transported, the same will get damaged,” warned Basheer.

Given the harsh winter months currently prevailing in the Valley, known as Chillai Kalan, there is an immediate need to transport the highly perishable apple crop and fresh vegetables to various parts of the country. The looming strike further raises concerns about potential increases in freight charges, exacerbating the challenges faced by the growers.

In their plea, the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union urged the Government of India to swiftly engage in negotiations with the striking transporters and truck drivers. The appeal highlighted the critical importance of resuming truck operations promptly to safeguard the interests of fruit growers, preventing additional losses during an already challenging period.

The Union also extended a request to the transporters and truck drivers, urging them to resolve the issue amicably through negotiations with the relevant authorities. This appeal aims to prevent financial losses for the transporters and drivers themselves, thereby ensuring a swift resolution to the ongoing strike.
