SRINAGAR: Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Monday announced that the Tariff Monitoring Unit under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will be further strengthened to closely track airfares across domestic and international routes.
Replying to supplementary questions during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Naidu said the Ministry monitors airfares continuously and takes necessary action whenever there is a possibility of a price hike. He cited the recent Indigo crisis, which led to mass flight cancellations, as an instance where the Ministry intervened to cap fares and keep them reasonable and affordable for passengers.
The Minister added that a tariff monitoring facility is now available on the AirSewa portal, allowing passengers to report excessively high fares by submitting screenshots. Following such complaints, the Ministry initiates action against the concerned airline.
Explaining the reason for fare fluctuations, Naidu said that airfares are generally affected by deregulation and tend to rise when demand exceeds supply. The strengthened monitoring, he added, aims to ensure transparency and protect passenger interests.
