SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Valley proudly hosts the world’s only floating post office, an extraordinary and distinctive facility situated on the serene waters of Dal Lake in Srinagar. This innovative postal service not only provides essential services to residents and tourists but also stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and ingenuity.
The Floating Post Office has been operating since the British era. The post office was formally established in 1953, which was inaugurated in the houseboat in 1970 and was renovated in August 2011. Post renovation, it was formally named the Floating Post Office.
The post office is built on an intricately carved maroon houseboat, now moored on the western edge of the Dal Lake. It is offering a picturesque and efficient postal service to the inhabitants of the lake and the surrounding areas. This initiative not only showcases the resourcefulness of the postal system but also preserves the traditional lifestyle of the region, merging modernity with heritage.
Ghulam Geelani, the postmaster stationed there, explained that the facility operates with all the amenities of a conventional post office, ensuring that the needs of the local population and the visiting tourists are met efficiently. “A museum has also been set up within the facility, including stamps that date back more than a century,” Geelani said.
Of its two small rooms, one serves as the office and the other a small museum that traces the philatelic history of Jammu and Kashmir’s postal department. The museum displays a range of important and regionally significant items. “We exhibit Kashmiri carpets, pherans, and many other globally renowned artefacts from the Kashmir Valley,” Geelani noted. “Not only do locals and visitors use this facility as a medium of communication, but it also attracts a significant number of tourists regularly.”

The Floating Post Office has received widespread acclaim for its uniqueness and the essential services it provides in a challenging terrain. “There are plans to further develop and promote this exceptional facility, enhancing its services and integrating more technology to serve the community better,” Geelani added.
