KUPWARA: Two persons including the widow have been detained in Kupwara groom’s mysterious death case that took place last month. Police and family sources confirmed the arrests.

Javeed Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Wavoora in the Lolab area of Kupwara district had died mysteriously three days after his wedding.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Sogam Ajaz Ahmad told Kashmir Life that they have arrested two persons so far including Khalida Begum, the widow, and Javaid Ahmad Teli, a resident of Teli Mohalla Lalpora.

“The investigations in the case are going on. These two have been in our custody for the past 25 days,” DySP Ahmad said.

Meanwhile, the widow’s father, Ali Mohammad Teli while confirming the detention of his daughter said, “My daughter is innocent. She should be released forthwith.  The case should be investigated and solved.”

He said that he met his daughter twice since her detention.

Begum has been lodged in Baramulla jail while the other accused Javaid Ahmad Teli is in Kupwara jail.

Sheikh had married Begum, 25, on June 6, and had died three days after the marriage when he suddenly fell unconscious inside his house.

He was rushed to a local health facility where poisonous substances had been detected in his body. Following his death, the native villagers had taken out a protest march demanding swift action in the case.
