Will Oppose Waqf Amendment Bill Inside and Outside Parliament: NC Leader

SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) leader Tanvir Sadiq has voiced strong opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was tabled in Parliament despite concerns raised by Muslim leaders across the country.

Speaking on the issue, Sadiq criticised the government’s disregard for these concerns: “It is a pity that despite the dissent from Muslim leaders and committee members, this bill is still being introduced.”

Sadiq argued that the proposed bill undermines minority rights, highlighting that it includes provisions allowing non-Muslims to be members of the Waqf Board—something, he noted, that is not mirrored in Hindu or Sikh boards.

He also raised concerns over the appointment of a collector as the arbitrator in Waqf matters, warning that such a move could lead to biased decisions in favour of the government.

“Four lakh properties are at risk,” Sadiq cautioned, referring to the potential implications of the bill. “This is against the interests of Muslims and minorities. We will oppose it both inside and outside Parliament.”

On the issue of the return of Kashmiri Pandits, Sadiq acknowledged their importance to the region, stating that Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without them. However, he emphasised the need to ensure their security and well-being.

“It is not just about bringing them back; it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe,” he said.

He expressed support for recent efforts to foster inter-community dialogue, noting that the involvement of religious leaders and political organisations is crucial in ensuring the security and integration of Kashmiri Pandits into the region. (KINS)
