NEW DELHI: A total of 1617 Indian women have allegedly been abandoned by their NRI spouses in foreign countries over the past five years, according to data compiled by the Ministry of External Affairs from Indian Missions and Posts abroad. The information was revealed in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on March 27, 2025.
The government has stated that while data on Indian women abandoned in India by their husbands who migrate abroad is maintained by state governments and Union Territory administrations, it does not keep a state-wise record of such cases at the central level. However, complaints from NRI women abandoned overseas are recorded, and 1617 such cases have been reported in the last five years.
In an effort to address this issue, the government has implemented multiple measures to assist affected women. Through its Missions and Posts abroad, it provides counselling, guidance, and legal information to victims. The government has also established mechanisms such as regular interactions with Indian community groups, NGOs, and associations to raise awareness and offer support. Additionally, emergency helplines and financial and legal aid under the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) are available for eligible women facing distress due to abandonment.
The Ministry of External Affairs also facilitates online consular assistance through platforms like MADAD, CPGRAMS, and social media. Walk-in sessions and Open House meetings are conducted regularly to address grievances and offer immediate support to affected women.
