SRINAGAR: The talks between Ladakh’s leadership and the Government of India on Tuesday concluded with key understandings on job reservations, political reservations for women in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDC) of Leh and Kargil, and the recognition of Bhoti and Urdu as official languages of the Union Territory (UT).
Former minister and senior leader of Apex Body Leh, Chering Dorjay, said that 95 per cent of government sector jobs would be reserved for Ladakhis as per the agreements.
“The vacant posts for medicos and engineers will be immediately referred to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC),” Dorjay stated.
He further revealed that the Centre has agreed to recognise Bhoti and Urdu as official languages of Ladakh. Additionally, there will be a 33 per cent reservation for women in the LAHDC of Leh and Kargil.
Each Hill Council consists of 30 members, of which 26 are directly elected while the remaining four are nominated by the government, representing religious minorities and women.
Dorjay added that the next round of talks is scheduled for January 16, 2025, to deliberate on key demands, including statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. (KNO)
