Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions Rise After Alleged Airstrikes Kill 13

SRINAGAR: Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government on Wednesday accused Pakistan of carrying out fresh airstrikes inside Afghan territory, claiming the attacks killed at least 13 civilians, including 11 children, and injured 14 others.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the strikes targeted the eastern provinces of Khost, Kunar and Paktika during the night. He alleged that Pakistani military aircraft violated Afghan airspace and bombed residential areas.

In a statement posted on X, Mujahid said the victims included 11 children, one woman and one elderly man. He described the strikes as a “humanitarian crime” and condemned what he called an act of aggression against Afghanistan.

The Taliban administration said 14 other people, including women and children, were wounded in the attacks.

Pakistan had not officially acknowledged the reported airstrikes at the time of publication, and there was no immediate response from Islamabad to the allegations.

The latest accusations come amid heightened tensions between the neighbouring countries, which have witnessed months of cross-border hostilities. The violence escalated in late February after Afghanistan launched retaliatory attacks following earlier Pakistani airstrikes, triggering a cycle of clashes that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Although temporary ceasefires have occasionally reduced hostilities, efforts to stabilise the border region have repeatedly faltered.

Islamabad has long accused Kabul of harbouring militants, particularly members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whom it blames for carrying out attacks inside Pakistan. The TTP is ideologically aligned with the Afghan Taliban but operates as a separate organisation. The Afghan authorities have consistently rejected the allegations.
