The Union government on Thursday  said that lifting of ban on Short Message Service(SMS) in pre-paid mobiles in Jammu and Kashmir is under consideration. J&K pre-paid customers are facing a ban on SMS service since April 2010.

“The ban was imposed on the asking of Home Ministry, we are always of the view that we must take appropriate measures in compliance with the Ministry of Home Affairs,” Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot said.

The Minister said, “My ministry only executes the wishes of the MHA but we hope that sometimes in future, we will be able to resolve this issue because people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve to get this facility but there are certain consideration on internal security, which have to be kept in mind.”

Pilot said  that his ministry is also working with the government of Jammu and Kashmir to sort out the issue.

During 2008 Amarnath agitation, the SMS facility was banned in the state. A ban was imposed on prepaid cell phones in November 2009, but was revoked in January 2010.

Pilot was in Jammu to inaugurate modernized post offices besides hi-tech Speed Post Centre through video link from National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) at University of Jammu.
