Canada Designates India’s Bishnoi Gang as Terrorist Entity

SRINAGAR: Canada has formally listed India’s Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, a move that empowers the federal government to seize property and freeze funds owned by the group in the country, reports BBC.

Announcing the decision on Tuesday, Public Safety Canada said the designation is part of Ottawa’s wider strategy to counter transnational organised crime and disrupt the financing of violent groups. The listing immediately imposes stringent measures, including travel bans, financial restrictions, and criminal penalties for anyone found aiding the gang.

“This designation reflects Canada’s zero-tolerance approach to violent organised crime,” Public Safety minister told reporters. “By freezing their assets and cutting off financial support, we are sending a clear message: Canada will not be a safe haven for criminal organisations.”

The Bishnoi gang, named after its alleged leader Lawrence Bishnoi, has been linked to contract killings, extortion rackets, arms trafficking, and drug networks in India. Canadian officials say the group has sought to expand its influence abroad, using overseas networks to launder money and finance operations.

Citing intelligence reports, a senior official said, “The gang has attempted to exploit Canadian financial institutions and communities to advance its criminal agenda. This listing ensures we have the legal tools to stop that.”

Legal analysts note that the designation allows Canada to target bank accounts, investments, and real estate linked to the group, with law enforcement agencies now empowered to prosecute individuals providing material support. “Anyone funnelling money, knowingly or unknowingly, to this entity risks prosecution under Canadian anti-terrorism law,” an analyst told a national broadcaster.

India has long sought international cooperation against the Bishnoi gang, which has been accused of orchestrating high-profile killings and spreading its network through digital channels. Tuesday’s move is expected to deepen collaboration between Indian and Canadian security agencies, despite recent diplomatic strains between the two nations.

“This is a significant step,” an Indian security official said as per NDTV. “The international recognition of the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organisation strengthens the case for coordinated crackdowns across borders.”

The listing, experts say, underlines Canada’s growing resolve to prevent its territory from being used as a hub for transnational crime, while also signalling solidarity with countries facing the gang’s violent footprint.
