‘Denied Security for Father’s Funeral’: Sajad Lone Targets National Conference

SRINAGAR: Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday alleged in the Legislative Assembly that the then National Conference-led government denied him security to attend the funeral of his father, Abdul Gani Lone, who was killed by militants in 2002.

Lone said that despite seeking security cover to attend the last rites in Eidgah, his request was turned down, even as he had been warned about threats to his life. He claimed that a request for minimal police protection was also refused on the grounds that personnel could be at risk.

Recalling the incident, he said the then Divisional Commissioner had advised him against attending the funeral due to security concerns.

Describing it as a deeply distressing experience, Lone said denial of security should not be based on ideological differences and questioned such decisions.

He further alleged that the use of security for political purposes has been a recurring practice across governments, stressing that there should be no compromise on safeguarding lives.

Lone also condemned the recent attack on National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, describing him as a prominent and dynamic political figure.
