Governments must implement strict policies to curb drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption, recognising that a society’s future depends on the principles it upholds.
A flourishing society is built upon strong moral values, mutual respect, and a shared sense of purpose. It thrives when families remain intact, traditions are honoured, and individuals are guided by principles rather than unchecked desires. However, history has shown that societies do not collapse overnight; their decline is often gradual, eroded by both internal decay and external influences.
One of the most insidious ways to undermine a thriving and morally upright society is through the systematic dismantling of its core values. This can be achieved by promoting decadence, weakening the family structure, and encouraging self-indulgence at the expense of discipline. The modern world has witnessed cultural shifts that, under the guise of progress and liberation, contribute to this decline. The normalisation of nude fashion shows, the widespread consumption of alcohol, and the rampant spread of drug abuse are among the forces corroding the ethical fabric of once-prosperous civilisations.
Modesty
Modesty has long served as a cornerstone of ethical societies. It extends beyond mere clothing; it is a manifestation of self-respect, dignity, and the belief that human beings should be valued for their intellect and character rather than their physical appearance. When a society begins to embrace nudity under the pretext of “fashion,” it sends a perilous message.
Nude fashion shows, where models parade with minimal or no clothing before a cheering audience, contribute to the erosion of moral values. They reduce individuals to objects of desire rather than beings of intellect and depth. The younger generation, exposed to such trends, begins to equate self-worth with physical exposure rather than inner strength and virtue.
Historically, civilisations that succumbed to excessive vulgarity and immodesty found themselves ensnared in moral and social decline. The Roman Empire, for instance, witnessed a gradual disintegration of its societal values as public nudity, debauchery, and unchecked indulgence took hold. A society that loses its sense of shame inevitably drifts from its moral compass, leading to fractured families, hollow relationships, and an overarching loss of purpose.
Slow Poison
Alcohol has long been a silent force behind the decline of societies. While it is often marketed as a symbol of relaxation and social connection, its long-term effects on individuals and families are devastating. Beneath the veneer of jovial gatherings and fleeting euphoria lies a trail of broken homes, shattered dreams, and moral decay.
The widespread consumption of alcohol brings with it a cascade of social afflictions. Families fracture under the weight of addiction, as dependency breeds domestic violence, financial ruin, and the neglect of responsibilities. Crime rates surge, with a significant proportion of violent offences—assaults, murders, and sexual crimes—committed under the influence. Health systems buckle under the burden of alcohol-related diseases, from liver damage to heart conditions and debilitating mental illnesses. Societies that embrace alcohol as a norm witness an erosion of discipline and duty. As personal indulgence takes precedence over communal responsibility, institutions falter, and the very foundations of social order begin to crumble.
The Drug Epidemic
If alcohol corrodes a society slowly, drugs dismantle it with alarming speed. The spread of drug culture marks the beginning of a civilization’s descent into chaos, consuming its youth and hollowing out its institutions. The promise of escape—marketed as freedom, enlightenment, or rebellion—lures the unsuspecting into a cycle of addiction, crime, and ultimately, destruction.
Drugs enslave their users, stripping them of the ability to think critically or function as responsible members of society. Mental health disorders, from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia, become rampant. The pursuit of intoxication takes precedence over education, leading to the degradation of academic institutions and the loss of intellectual capital. Crime escalates, as addicts resort to theft, violence, and even murder to sustain their habits. History bears witness to the fate of nations that succumb to drug culture—economic collapse, moral degradation, and an irreparable loss of identity. The opioid crisis in Kashmir stands as a grim testament to the havoc drugs can wreak when left unchecked.
Destructive Forces
What unites nude fashion shows, alcohol, and drugs is their underlying message: the pursuit of pleasure without consequence. They foster self-indulgence, weaken individuals, and dismantle the moral fabric of society. A population consumed by these vices becomes easily manipulated, too distracted to recognise or resist the forces that seek to control it.
In recent years, the rise of the drug mafia has been staggering. Reports of young boys found unconscious in drains have become distressingly common. Even during the holy month of Ramadan, incidents of local youths drinking at resorts have surfaced, highlighting the depth of this crisis. Young girls, too, are being drawn into illicit activities, their futures jeopardised by a culture that normalises moral decay.
The recent nude fashion show in Gulmarg, a valley known as the “Land of Flowers,” has left many in a state of disbelief. These valleys, created by Almighty Allah, were meant to inspire contemplation, their snow-clad peaks drawing hearts towards the remembrance of the Divine. But this spectacle on the pristine snow has delivered a painful contrast. Gulmarg, once known as the land of saints and awliyas who dedicated their lives to upholding spiritual and moral values, has now witnessed an event that stands in stark opposition to that legacy.
The Path to Restoration
If a society wishes to preserve its dignity, strength, and moral foundation, it must actively resist these destructive forces. The first step is education and awareness. Young people must be taught the value of self-respect, discipline, and ethical living, ensuring they do not fall prey to these corrosive influences. Strong family bonds are equally vital, as a united household serves as the first line of defence against moral decline. Parents must lead by example, embodying the values they wish to instil in their children.
Communities must also take a stand. The normalisation of immodesty, addiction, and vice must be met with collective resistance. Apathy only allows these influences to tighten their grip. Alongside social action, legislation and enforcement play a crucial role. Governments must implement strict policies to curb drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption, recognising that a society’s future depends on the principles it upholds.
A truly beautiful society is not measured solely by technological progress or economic success, but by the values that bind its people together. If those values are not safeguarded, everything that gives life meaning risks being lost.
