SRINAGAR: At least 25 people were rescued after flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall hit several areas of Mendhar subdivision in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Friday, officials said.
Quoting officials news agency GNS reported that heavy rainfall caused a sudden rise in water levels in Ari area, resulting in flooding of residential areas. Water entered several houses, while soil erosion was also reported from affected villages.
The flash floods also impacted Harni and Gursai areas of Mendhar, where standing crops suffered extensive damage, adding to the losses faced by local residents and farmers.
Following the incident, teams from Mendhar Police and the civil administration rushed to the affected areas and launched rescue and relief operations. Residents from vulnerable locations were evacuated and assistance was provided to affected families.
Senior PDP leader Waseem Rafiq Hussain Khan also visited the flood-hit areas and demanded immediate compensation for families whose houses were damaged and farmers who suffered crop losses. He urged the administration to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation measures.
Officials said a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the flash floods is underway.
