SRINAGAR: Truth, it is being said, has many shades. Possibly the falsehood follows the same pattern, at least in the Kupwara “attack” case in which a BJP man’s son was reported injured on Friday. The “attack” triggered serious tensions within the security grid. By now the third version of the “attack” is out.

Ishfaq Shafi Mir, a BJP activist, who is the son of BJP district president Kupwara, before being discharged from District Hospital Kupwara on July 16, 2021. Police later arrested him for faking the attack to get attention.

Ishfaq Mir, son of BJP’s district president Mohammad Shafi Mir was travelling around Gulgam in Kupwara when he received a bullet. Within minutes the news was flashed that BJP leader’s son was attacked.

By the time, the news was already on the TV, the second version came. Police said the one personal security officer (PSO) had a misfire from his service weapon and hit the Mir Jr. The other PSO, also accompanying the young Mir, out of fear opened fire from his service weapon. The young man was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and discharged. The bullet had fled after injuring the Mir on his arm.

On Monday, the police made arrests of two BJP workers and their two PSOs. It happened after the police investigated the case and found the “attack” was orchestrated by the two cops and the two protected persons to get “enhanced security and attract senior leaders’ attention”.

The court send included Ishfaq Ahmad Mir – the young man who was “attacked” and his colleague, Basharat Ahmad along with their two personal security officers to police remand for seven days. Investigator told reporters that the “Bollywood style conspiracy” was cracked during questioning.

Embarrassed, the BJP has suspended Mir, his son and Basharat Ahmad from the party. It has initiated an internal enquiry. The father son’s membership, however, has not been terminated. “The incident which took place in Kupwara on the night of 16th July in which Ishfaq Ahmad Mir, son of Mohammad Shafi, district president Kupwara, was involved. Some reports received from various sources took us to think about the credibility of our workers. As such party has taken this decision that Shri GM Mir state spokesperson of the party will examine the whole facts of the incident and report the party by 25th July,” the party said in a statement.

Shafi was a long time NC worker in Kupwara like his father. A resident of Dragmulla, he, for many years lived in Bramaulla where he was married. He was the president of the Bus Drivers Association for a long time. Almost two years back, party sources said, he joined BJP and was given accommodation in Kupwara. His son, who was arrested, was IT cell in charge of the BJP party for Baramulla, according to party insiders.

This, however, is not for the first time that the BJP workers get in a confrontation with the law. In April and May, two BJP panchayat members were arrested in Anantnag and Sopore areas for running an extortion racket. They were accused of impersonating militants to extort money from traders and apple dealers.

Last year Tariq Ahmad Mir, a BJP man, was arrested by the NIA for alleged terror links; he was accused of supplying arms to terror group Hizbul Mujahideen. Mir was a sarpanch from Wachi in the Shopian district. He had contested the 2014 Assembly polls on a BJP ticket.
