Gadkari Confirms Singhpora-Vailoo Tunnel Under Active Consideration, Clearing Air on ‘Rejection’ Rumours

SRINAGAR: After months of speculation and viral claims suggesting its rejection, the Singhpora-Vailoo Tunnel Project—one of Kashmir’s most awaited infrastructure initiatives—has received a significant boost. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari confirmed that the project remains under active consideration.

The clarification came in response to a DO Letter sent by National Conference leader Omar Abdullah (Ref. No. NHIDCL/J&K/VIPREFERENCE/2024/226465 dated April 7, 2025), in which he had sought details about the project’s status. In his reply, Gadkari assured that the Singhpora-Vailoo Tunnel will soon be approved, ending widespread confusion triggered by earlier reports that the Public Investment Board (PIB) had turned down the proposal.

Contrary to those reports, a recent RTI query with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has confirmed that the PIB has not rejected the project. This official communication puts to rest unfounded speculation about the proposal’s fate, which caused disappointment and uncertainty among residents and stakeholders.

As highlighted in earlier analyses, the government has already invested significant sums into the strategic NH-244 corridor, which includes the proposed tunnel route. Given this investment and the tunnel’s critical role in improving connectivity between Kashmir and the Chenab Valley, shelving the project always appeared unlikely.

In another sign of progress, the final forest clearance process is reportedly underway, with relevant activity visible on the Parivesh portal. This step is essential for obtaining the necessary environmental approvals, signalling that the project is advancing through official procedures.

The Singhpora-Vailoo Tunnel is envisaged as a transformative link that would enhance all-weather connectivity, boost trade and tourism, and reduce travel time between the Kashmir Valley and Doda-Kishtwar in Jammu division. Once sanctioned, the project will be tendered and awarded for construction, bringing much-needed relief to the people of both regions.
